Lake Terrace

In Response to the Landscape - Lake Terrace

Building on a steep site with restricted access is never straightforward, particularly within a well-established residential area. Careful planning and precise construction were essential to deliver this exceptional home while working within the constraints of the site and surrounding properties.

Designed by Fraser Cameron Architecture, the home's layout responds directly to the landscape and the way the owners live. The main living spaces and master suite are positioned to capture uninterrupted lake views, creating a strong connection between the interior and its spectacular setting. Separate guest accommodation provides privacy and independence for visiting adult children and grandchildren, allowing the home to comfortably adapt as the family gathers.

A generous, covered outdoor living area extends the home's entertaining spaces, complete with an outdoor fireplace that creates a warm, sheltered retreat for year-round enjoyment. Whether hosting family, relaxing after a day on the lake, or simply taking in the ever-changing outlook, the space has been designed to be used in every season.

Sustainability and long-term comfort were central to the design. A geothermal bore was drilled on site, providing a natural energy source for the home's hydronic in-slab heating, domestic hot water and spa pool. Combined with expansive north-facing glazing that captures passive solar warmth, the home delivers exceptional energy efficiency and year-round comfort.

The result is a refined contemporary residence that balances thoughtful design, technical expertise and sustainable performance. Despite the challenges of the site, the home feels effortless—filled with natural light, connected to its surroundings, and perfectly positioned to enjoy one of Taupō's most impressive outlooks.
